- The First Two Hundred Years of British Women in the Sky

A talk by Sally Smith

Sally will talk about her latest book, based on the lives of the British women who achieved real firsts in aviation: the first to go up in a balloon in 1785; the first to gain her pilots’ licence; the first woman (brought up in a Victorian workhouse) to make a parachute descent; the fabulous women of the ATA in the second world war; Diana Barnato, the first British woman to go through the sound barrier; and finally Helen Sharman, the first British woman in space. She will talk about their personal stories, some funny, some breathtaking, and about how or why they got involved in what in those days was a new and very male-orientated field.
