If you are interested in genealogy and would like to learn the basic tools to research your post 1837 (when civil registration began) British ancestors, we would encourage you to join this short-term Introduction to Genealogy Group. This group will meet for four 2-hour meetings, at times agreed in advance with participants. The meetings will cover the following topics:

- Meeting 1 – Introduction to genealogy, creating your Family Tree from the information we know
- Meeting 2 – Finding our ancestors in 10-year Census records
- Meeting 3 – Finding Birth, Marriage and Death records for our ancestors
- Meeting 4 – Using other sources of information e.g. military records, newspapers, trees from members of the public
If you are interested in joining this short-term group you will need to commit to
- attending all 4 meetings (dates and times will be negotiated in advance with all members of the group)
- spending 2 – 3 hours between meetings to prepare for the next meeting. This may include reading Factsheets, undertaking simple computer searches on free websites.
You will need basic IT skills, for example,
- receive and send emails.
- access information on the internet. Links may be sent as URL links. Information such as internet articles, search engines or templates to be completed (to help collect and collate the information you find) may be sent as URL links or email attachments.
In return you should expect to
- produce a family tree going back a couple of generations (hopefully to 1837 when civil registration began)
- know where your ancestors lived, and their occupations as shown in 10-year Census records
- have experience of using genealogy websites to find genealogy records.
Once you have completed this short-term introduction, we hope you will join the main Genealogy Group which meets monthly on the 2nd Friday (10.30 – 12.30).
This group will run when there is sufficient interest from members. The dates and times of the meetings will be agreed beforehand with all members.
